Missed and delayed diagnosis of neonatal meningitis.

چکیده
Hydrocephalus is but one of the several sequelae of neonatal meningitis (NM). Other common sequelae include mental retardation, seizures, and sensorineural hearing loss(2). Therefore, studying cases of hydrocephalus alone may not reflect a true picture of unrecognized NM and figures thus obtained may under-estimate the proportion of missed cases. In fact, in the present series too, 4/13 infants presenting with hydrocephalus had seizures also. Further studies are required to determine the proportion of cases of infantile seizures where unrecognized NM could be a contributing factor.

Frequency of Neonatal and children bacterial meningitis and determining their antibiotic sensitivity patterns in Hospitals of Iran
Meningitis is one of the most important causes of infant mortality and its early and proper diagnosis is of great importance, but there are currently no laboratory facilities optimized and fast in detection of meningitis pathogens. The current standard of bacterial meningitis diagnosis is microscopic examination and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture. This research aimed at isolating the most co...
متن کاملIs there any Correlation between Cerebrospinal Fluid and Serum C-reactive Protein in Neonates Suspected to Meningitis?
Background: Meningitis is a common life threatening infection in neonatal period. Diagnostic value of CSF-CRP level in bacterial meningitis in children and adults has been studied worldwide, but there are limited studies on CSF-CRP in neonatal meningitis. This study conducted to assess any relation between CSF-CRP and plasma CRP levels and abnormal CSF findings in neonates suspected to meningit...
متن کاملNeonatal Meningitis: Overcoming Challenges in Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Treatment with Omics
Neonatal meningitis is a devastating condition. Prognosis has not improved in decades, despite the advent of improved antimicrobial therapy and heightened index of suspicion among clinicians caring for affected infants. One in ten infants die from meningitis, and up to half of survivors develop significant lifelong complications, including seizures, impaired hearing and vision, and delayed or a...
متن کاملComparative study of bacteriological culture and real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (RT-PCR) and multiplex PCR-based reverse line blot (mPCR/RLB) hybridization assay in the diagnosis of bacterial neonatal meningitis
BACKGROUND Bacterial meningitis is more common in the neonatal period than any other time in life; however, it is still a challenge for the evidence based diagnosis. Strategy for identification of neonatal bacterial meningitis pathogens is presented by evaluating three different available methods to establish evidence-based diagnosis for neonatal bacterial meningitis. METHODS The cerebrospina...
متن کاملCEREBROSPINAL FLUID FINDINGS IN NEONATAL BACTERIAL MENINGITIS
Background : Meningitis is more common during the neonatal period than other periods of life and has a prevalence of one in 1000 live births. The similarity of its clinical manifestations with other infectious diseases makes it difficult to diagnose. The aim of the current study was to determine the relationship between age, sex, clinical signs and symptoms and laboratory test results of ne...
